Optical Academy, a leader in the eye care sector, will start accepting crypto as payment for eye care services and eyewear. According to a May 6, 2021 announcement, those in the crypto sector will now be allowed to use their crypto to buy eyeglasses and contact lenses at physical and online stores as well as when receiving eyecare services onsite.
Details Of The Announcement
Optical Academy made the revelation in conjunction with its sister firms. The firms are TeleEyes Corp. and Optistyles LLC. Optistyles is an online eyewear store that lets customers buy cost-effective eyewear with a prescription. On the other hand, TeleEyes is an online eyecare platform where patients can connect with leading eye care experts. Users of the TeleEyes platform receive treatment for their eye conditions, renew their prescriptions, and receive a virtual fit for new glasses. Those in need of eye care can now access all the services offered by Optical Academy and its sister companies using their crypto holdings.
The Accepted Crypto Coins
As per the announcement, Optical Academy will accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, USDC, and DAI as payment. Users can choose to pay using a credit card or by crypto via Coinbase Commerce during the checkout process. With time, Optical Academy plans to increase the number of accepted crypto coins for in-store and online purchases. The announcement revealed that the company plans to add XRP and Dogecoin as payment options within the next few weeks.
What Leaders Had To Say
According to Abby Ayoub, the CEO of Optical Academy, one lesson they had learned about being disruptors in the eye care sector was that they had to move with the times. He added that they had been working to ensure they achieved this goal and they were happy to share the journey with their customers. Ayoub concluded by stating that:
“We felt like it was our duty to offer this form of payment to the world for eyewear. The times are evolving and so will we!”

Understanding Coinbase Commerce
Coinbase Commerce is an enterprise-grade payment solution created by the Coinbase exchange. It allows merchants to accept crypto payments with ease in various crypto assets such as ETH, BTC, and LTC. Merchants using the service receive the funds directly into a wallet they control. The service can be integrated into a merchant’s checkout workflow or added as a payment option in the shopping portal.
A major benefit of the Coinbase Commerce service is that all payments are on-chain, which helps to eliminate the possibility of fraudulent transactions. In 2019 alone, the Coinbase Commerce service processed $135 million worth of crypto payments. In the past, Coinbase Commerce has also been used to allow crypto holders to make donations in crypto.
