Why AI Engines Look Beyond a Brand’s Own Website
AI search engines assemble answers from sources that sit well outside a company’s own website, and the available research shows that third-party platforms account for a large share of what gets cited. Forums, video sites, professional networks, reference works and editorial publications all appear in the citation lists of ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode and Perplexity, often ahead of the brands those answers describe. For a company trying to understand why a competitor is named in an answer and it is not, the explanation frequently lies in where each is discussed rather than in how well either has optimized its own pages.
The reason is structural. A language model asked for a recommendation or a comparison has to weigh claims about a brand, and a brand’s own site is an interested party. Independent descriptions, whether a user discussion, a review, an analyst write-up or a news article, give the system corroboration it cannot get from first-party copy. Google’s guidance on AI features in Search states that no special optimizations are required beyond standard SEO best practices, which means the third-party layer is influenced by the same fundamentals of being useful, credible and widely referenced, and not by a separate technical lever.
This article reviews the research that has been published on third-party platforms and AI citations, separates studies with disclosed methods from vendor-reported figures, and sets out what it does and does not allow a marketing team to conclude. It continues our series on the signals that influence AI search citations, following our analyses of publisher mentions, backlinks and content structure.
What the Research Shows About Third-Party Sources and Citations
The most extensive public dataset comes from Semrush, which tracked the most-cited domains across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity in weekly snapshots from July 14 to October 12, 2025, covering more than 230,000 prompts and over 100 million citations. Reddit and LinkedIn ranked among the five most-cited domains on all three engines. On ChatGPT, Reddit and Wikipedia led, while on AI Mode the leaders were LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit, a pattern Semrush noted is consistent with Google owning or partnering with several of those properties. Perplexity’s list included Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH and Microsoft.
The same study is a caution against treating any single ranking as fixed. Semrush recorded Reddit appearing in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August and falling to about 10% by mid-September, with Wikipedia declining from roughly 55% to under 20% over the same stretch, while the shift was isolated to ChatGPT. Semrush states that the data does not establish why the change occurred. The practical reading is that the weight an engine places on a given platform can move quickly, so a strategy built on a single platform carries more risk than one built on a broad footprint.
Other published figures are less transparent. An Adweek report from January 26, 2026 compiled results from four AI visibility vendors and found YouTube overtaking Reddit as a cited social source in several of them. Goodie AI’s sample of 6.1 million citations across 66 brands put YouTube at 39.2% of social citations in December, up from 18.9% in August, with Reddit at 20.3%, down from 44.2%. Adweek noted that the vendors used different metrics, time windows and undisclosed query sets, so the figures should be read as directional. AirOps reports that 48% of AI search citations come from community platforms, but its published page gives no methodology or sample size, and we treat that number as vendor-reported.
| Source | Engines | Sample | Reported finding | Method disclosure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush (Jul to Oct 2025) | ChatGPT, AI Mode, Perplexity | 230,000+ prompts, 100M+ citations | Reddit and LinkedIn in top five on all three engines; ChatGPT shares for Reddit and Wikipedia fell sharply in September | Dates and scope stated |
| Goodie AI via Adweek (Jan 2026) | Multiple | 6.1M citations, 66 brands | YouTube 39.2% of social citations in December versus Reddit 20.3% | Brand sample narrow; queries undisclosed |
| AirOps (2026 report page) | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode | Described as millions of citations | 48% of citations from community platforms | No method published; vendor-reported |
| Ahrefs (75,000 brands) | Google AI Overviews | 75,000 brands | Brand web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, versus 0.218 for backlinks | Correlation, not causation |
Community Platforms, Video and Professional Networks Compared
The platforms that recur in the research differ in what they contribute to an answer, and the differences matter for how a company should think about presence on each. Reddit supplies first-person experience and informal comparison, which suits the open-ended questions users ask about tools, providers and service quality. LinkedIn supplies professional context, including company pages, executive posts and long-form articles, and its prominence on both AI Mode and Perplexity in the Semrush data suggests that organization and author profiles there are read as identity signals as well as content. Wikipedia functions as a reference layer for established entities, which is why it features so prominently for ChatGPT when the question concerns a known organization or concept.
YouTube is the clearest example of a platform where the form of the content shapes its use. The Adweek report notes that language models rely on transcripts and metadata rather than watching video, so a clear title, description and spoken explanation determine whether a video can be cited at all. Profound, one of the vendors in that report, listed YouTube as the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews and Gemini as of January 2026, though that is a vendor claim and Google’s ownership of the platform is a plausible contributing factor.
These platforms are not equally accessible to every company. A brand can publish on LinkedIn and YouTube on its own terms, but Reddit participation is governed by community norms, and promotional posting from a corporate account is commonly removed or penalized by moderators. The citations in the research reflect organic discussion, which a company can encourage through product quality, useful documentation and genuine participation by named staff, but cannot manufacture. Teams should be wary of any provider that offers to supply forum or review activity on a company’s behalf, since the practice conflicts with platform rules and creates reputational exposure that outweighs any citation benefit.
Editorial Publications and Brand Mentions
Community platforms are one part of the third-party layer. Editorial publications are the other, and in regulated or high-stakes categories they carry particular weight. In the SE Ranking study of 1,200 keywords published in September 2024, finance queries triggered AI Overviews 41.67% of the time, and the most frequently linked sources were established financial publishers: Investopedia with 68 links, NerdWallet with 57 and Bankrate with 56. The study predates the current generation of AI Mode and ChatGPT search, so it describes Google’s behavior at that time, but it illustrates that in finance the sources an engine reaches for tend to be recognized editorial brands.
The Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands supports the broader point. It found that brand web mentions correlated at 0.664 with visibility in Google AI Overviews, compared with 0.218 for backlinks. Correlation does not establish that mentions cause visibility, since well-known brands attract both, but the gap suggests that being discussed across the web is a stronger indicator than link count alone. We covered the implications for backlinks in the earlier article in this series.
For companies in crypto, fintech and financial services, the implication is that independent editorial coverage is part of the evidence an engine can draw on when it describes a company or compares it with others. A well-placed article in a relevant publication gives a model a third-party statement of what the company does, who runs it and why it is credible, in a form that is indexed and attributable. That is the function of publisher mentions in the framework we have outlined, and it explains why the quality and relevance of the publication matter more than the number of placements. Consistent descriptions of the company across publications also reinforce entity clarity, which helps engines connect separate mentions to the same organization.
What the Evidence Does Not Establish
Several limits should shape how this research is used. Citation share is not the same as influence on the answer, and it is not the same as traffic or conversions. A domain can be cited frequently because it is broad, as Reddit and Wikipedia are, without that telling a specific company that participation there will change how it is described. The studies also measure citations in aggregate across many topics, and none of those we reviewed isolated finance or crypto, so the category-level behavior of each engine remains an open question.
The figures are also unstable. The Semrush data shows large swings within weeks, and the vendor reports differ in metrics and time windows, so a ranking of platforms published today may not describe the position next quarter. Where methods are not disclosed, as with the AirOps community-platform figure, the number is best used to indicate that the third-party layer is substantial and not as a benchmark to plan against. The interpretations in this article, including how each platform’s role differs, are our reading of the published data and have not been tested by controlled experiment.
Finally, the research describes where engines look, and not what a company should do in response. Nothing in it demonstrates that a particular tactic, such as a set number of placements or a posting cadence on a forum, produces a predictable change in citations. The defensible conclusion is narrower: engines draw on independent sources, those sources vary by engine and over time, and a company with a consistent, well-documented presence across several of them is better positioned than one that relies on its own site.
Where This Fits Into a Broader Authority Strategy
Third-party platforms are best treated as the corroboration layer of an authority strategy. The company’s own website establishes what it does and supplies the structured, well-organized content an engine can quote, while independent sources confirm that description from outside. A practical starting point is an inventory of where the company and its executives are currently discussed: which publications have covered it, which platforms carry profiles or discussions, and whether the descriptions agree with one another. Gaps and inconsistencies in that inventory are usually more informative than any single platform’s citation share.
From there, effort is usually best directed to the sources that are both credible and within the company’s control. Maintaining complete professional profiles, publishing video with clear titles and descriptions where it suits the audience, and contributing genuinely useful expertise to relevant communities all build the footprint without relying on tactics that platforms prohibit. Editorial coverage in publications relevant to the company’s sector adds the independent, attributable layer that the research associates most closely with AI visibility. Visionary Financial’s PR Marketplace provides editorial and media placements across publishers in crypto, fintech, finance and technology for that purpose.
To see how a website’s authority footprint compares with competitors, including which third-party signals are present or missing, the AI Authority Audit analyzes the site and identifies the gaps worth addressing first.
